Waterbury Hospital to Honor First Responders
WATERBURY, May 17, 2022 – When a 10-year-old Maple Hill Elementary School student collapsed in the classroom his classroom teacher sprang into action performing CPR and shocking the student until Naugatuck Police and ambulance service members could take over. He was taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment and later transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital.
The student will once again meet those who saved his life and present them with EMS awards during the EMS Week Awards Banquet, in the Bizzozero Conference Room at Waterbury Hospital on May 18, in the Bizzozero Conference Room at Waterbury Hospital at 6 pm.
Also being honored are EMS and firefighters from Beacon Hose Company 1 who saved the life of a Bridgeport woman who was hit by a wrong way driver on Route 8 an area first responder and EMS leader whose bout with COVID-19 almost took his life.
Emergency medical first responders, EMTs and paramedics from Watertown, Woodbury, Middlebury, Beacon Falls, American Medical Response and Waterbury police and fire will be honored during the first EMS Awards since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
May 15-21 is EMS Week. Waterbury Hospital is holding activities at the hospital and in the community to mark this week and to honor first responders, including the awards banquet.
"First responders are often the first line of care and serve as an essential link between our patients and the doctors and nurses in the Emergency Room. They truly are heroes in their communities and, along with hospital and other frontline workers, have worked long hours during the COVID-19 pandemic doing what they do best, saving lives," said Waterbury Hospital President and CEO Justin Lundbye. "We're pleased to honor their vital contributions and hard work."
